The 1991 Building Regulations require that all properties built since June 1992 must be fitted with mains operated interlinked smoke detectors/alarms on each floor.
Regulations regarding older properties differ but we strongly recommend that smoke alarms are fitted in all let properties and are regularly checked to ensure that they are in full working order.
You may also wish to consider making provisions for CO detection (Carbon Monoxide). This is the invisible killer of thousands each year. This gas cannot be seen, is odourless and most people who have been affected by it were not even aware it was CO.
The symptoms are merely tiredness, irritability and initially mild nausea as the gas prevents the blood for absorbing oxygen. Although your gas appliances must have an annual inspection, you never know when they may malfunction.
